FAQs

Frequently asked questions regarding transport

  1. 1

How can one do work on boats in France tax free?

The inward processing scheme for "repairs" is a specific "transformation" customs arrangement that allows for importation of a third party boat for repairs and refurbishment prior to re-exportation.

Placing the vessel in this inward processing scheme allows one to take advantage of work and outfitting tax free.

  2. 2

What conditions are needed to put an inward processing scheme in place?

Inward processing for "repairs" is available to boats:

    • carrying out work within the European Union (EU)
    • flying a pleasure boat flag from outside the European Union
    • whose ownership or proprietary company is established outside the EU
    • having never paid VAT, non-Union status.
    • that can prove presence for fewer than 18 months once the inward processing scheme has been initiated
    • provided there is no inward processing scheme initiated for any other boat in customs in France
  3. 3

How does the inward processing scheme for boat repairs work?

To take advantage of the inward processing scheme for "repairs", work with a Registered Customs Representative who specializes in this field:

    • You'll need to produce an overall estimate for the expected repairs/work.
    • Your Registered Customs Representative will request an inward processing scheme from the customs office nearest the place where the repairs will be performed and will ensure management of the paperwork required to track its progress.

What could be more convenient, since MATHEZ FREIGHT is also a Registered Customs Representative! Contact us.

What do FIATA, IATA, and AEO-Full certifications mean?

MATHEZ FREIGHT is IATA, FIATA and FONASBA certified and since 2013 also has AEO-Full status, which includes the AEO certificate for "customs streamlining" and the AEO certificate for "safety and security."

    • "AEO" accreditation (Authorized Economic Operator) is awarded by the Customs Authority to companies that satisfy strict customs criteria and demonstrate continuous quality, conformity, and reliability across the international logistical chain.
    • IATA certification also allows the use of any commercial airliner and use of their AWB.
    • FIATA certification governs relations between loaders and actors in the maritime shipping industry, with FIATA regulations serving as the reference in the event of a dispute.
    • Since 2007, the FONASBA (International Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers and Agents) quality standard has been recognizing agents who meet financial strength criteria and demonstrate the top level of commitment in terms of professionalism and quality.
